      <image:title>Intergenerational - Wealth that lasts lifetimes</image:title>
      <image:caption>Very soon after launching Perceptive Planning we became aware that many of our clients have achieved their wealth by the sale of a family owned business. In jargon terms, that makes them ‘First Generation Wealth’. This means initially ensuring that parents are safe and secure, with an income stream they cannot outlive wherever possible. Once that happy position is reached, we look at gifting money. We like to ensure that gifts ‘come with a planner’. This helps get the next generation – and the one after that – used to the life-changing effects of wealth, whilst understanding how to control and preserve it. This means ensuring that all available allowances are used. We use cashflow planning to show the effect of choices and changes to capital and expenditure. In this scenario we take a long-term, multi-generational view rather than a traditional ‘fund picking’ approach. And since each family is different, tailoring and personalising our advice is critical in these situations.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Mr and Mrs Somerset had been very successful in life and should have been comfortable in retirement. Unfortunately, a series of speculative investments made upon the advice of previous financial advisers had resulted in compounded losses of some £1 million. We were able to help them recover some, but not all, of these losses. Our first priority was to take a hard look at what their income requirements were, and if they could sustain their lifestyle. Then, we asked what their ‘sacred cows’ were – the things on which they were unwilling to compromise. The clients’ answer was ‘I do not want to spend a £1 less on a bottle of wine!’</image:caption>

      <image:caption>After extensive analysis and discussion, our approach was to set up a ‘Managed Retreat’. With their active input and awareness we at Perceptive are slowly and carefully managing the erosion of their overall capital, whilst still allowing them to sustain their lifestyle. This involved working with the client to sell off assets, reduce costs, and increase income from other sources.  Mr and Mrs Somerset are now far more relaxed about their lifestyle. They are confident that there will be money left over at the end of their lives, rather than life left over at the end of the money, which was a distinct possibility at one point! They are still very hands on with their portfolio, and the assets continue to grow – they now have secure financial independence.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Our clients Dr &amp; Mr London had been successful in South Africa and had worked with a financial planner there. Over time their children moved to the UK and they followed suit. Initially this was a ‘swallow lifestyle’ (swallows never see winter…), but eventually they made the full move. Apart from a step change in the underlying cost basis of their lives, it was time to reorganise their finances. Whilst all liabilities were now in sterling, their assets – and resultant income – were in both rands and dollars. This ran into two key challenges: the uncertainty and income fluctuations caused by currency fluctuations; and the realisation that more of the income was taxable, since normal UK tax allowances were not being used.</image:caption>

Along the way, they have acquired products or funds from a variety of sources, but mainly from running a profitable business. One of the first things Mr Wright said to us was “I built my business from scratch, but as I now approach retirement, I’m aware that if I make a mistake now, it’s too late for me to go back and make my wealth again”.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>We quickly established that whilst they have indeed done very well, there were key areas that they were in danger of not getting quite right. The restriction in the Lifetime Allowance was likely to affect them, but equally, they had not used all the legitimate allowances open to them. Using Capital Gains Tax allowances where possible we have restructured their portfolio to reduce cost, whilst being very mindful of their attitude and capacity for investment risk. We were able to reduce many of their costs by around 1% per annum – a significant gain! As the initial phase of working with Mr and Mrs Wright comes to an end, we can focus on being the ‘safe pair of hands’ going forward and giving sound, technical financial planning and guidance.</image:caption>
